First look at a Backup Camera
by Giles on Aug.18, 2009, under Backup Camera system's, UK available items
So I have added the first thing that caught my attention when I got back to this blog. The VR3 Wireless Back-up Camera System. I was expecting that there would be simple PIR type sensors available much more easily. But the first bit of research I had done showed that full camera systems are quite popular and surprisingly cheap too I thought.
So I took a look at this and read some testimonial of folks that had used the VR3 Wireless Back-up Camera System before and they were mostly quite favorable. Naturally there are always a few that disagree, but for now this Wireless Back-up Camera System looks like a bargain. The thing that kept getting mentioned as a major plus point was the comparatively large (3.5 inch) screen. Normally you’ll pay a lot more for the extra inch in screen size and if your using a visual aid like this then the last thing you need is a diddy little screen that is less effective than craning your head out the window!
I was most amused by the gentleman that used this camera to get around the problem of hitching up his 5th Wheel RV. This kind of recreational vehicle is one I have seen a lot of since I came to the US but is I think pretty much unheard of in the UK. Over in blighty we prefer (if that’s the correct term) the caravan, but regardless this camera ought to work in either vehicle. Personally I think having a mini cam right behind your caravan a whole lot more safe than just relying on the crazy looking extended mirror units that some caravanners use. I mean why widen your already large vehicle with booster mirrors if you can see directly behind you with a camera? I’m gonna have to look see if any of these things are available in the UK as well I can see that now I have started this site… Oh well I’m in touch with my inner geek, so it should be fun!
Essentially he bought a second system, in this case the baby brother of this one which only has a 2.5 inch screen because it was cheap and the camera’s were the same. One camera covers the 5th wheel so he can reverse onto the kingpin without assistance if needed, the fact that the camera mounts are adjustable made sure he could focus the camera precisely where he needed it for this. Then once hooked up he flips a switch and accesses the second camera mounted on the back of his trailer. Simple as that.
But this is my point on this blog. All of these devices – or at least the ones I plan on writing about, are simple to use and comparatively cheap for the functionality they bring you.
What do you think of my first shot at this? As I go on I’ll try and highlight the current fave model on the side bar. When something more interesting comes in It’ll likely get relegated to a side section leaving just the top one or two Backup Camera System’s or sensors displayed. That way I figure anyone that comes here can quickly see the number one on my recommended list as they arrive. Sound like a good idea?
After a bit of looking around there is some good news for those of you reading this back in good old England. The VR3 3.5 system IS available in the UK at this link. Naturelly the price has gone up but not by as much as I feared it might and its still sub £100 and is so far one of the best all round backup camera systems that I have found in terms of utility and price.
