So this is the first add on sensor package that I found at what seemed to be a reasonable price! You get a rather lurid display system to hide someplace on your dashboard. There is a four sensor model as well which adds in a little audio beeper as well, but from what I have read its a bit feeble. They do do an add on Beeper which can be fitted to either the four or two sensor model that has more clout to it but that’s a paid option…
Not being wireless you need to bore out a couple of strategically placed holes in your rear bumper and run the cables from these reversing sensors into the trunk (NB for my fellow brits trunk=Boot OK?). That done its just a case of hooking the appropriate wire into the reversing light of your vehicle and its pretty much good to go, oh that and run a thin cabel from trunk to the front display as well.
Now at about $35-$40 this Reversing sensor kit is a steal but does require a bit more work than some might like. I hate to think what a garage might charge to fit something like this! All of it looks simple to me but like most folks simple looking is not always simple doing eh!
However this parking aid device while not for the novice illustrates my original point. If they want to charge us the consumer only $35 for an add on Backup sensor kit like this, how much more cheaply could the car manufacturers have installed this as standard?
I’m going to keep looking for reversing sensor type products and distill whatever feedback others have put out about them as I go along, but for now here’s a basic offering. It occurs to me that it should be easily possible for a wireless version I would have thought. Maybe with Bluetooth serving as the transmitting carrier. USB bluetooth dongles retail for only a few quid in the UK and can’t be over $10 here (including tax) so how hard could it be to make a Parking sensor you simply clip onto the back of your trunk and stick the beeper unit near the drivers seat I wonder.
